While we’re all busy getting the pants scared off us by The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, it may have been easy not to notice that New Line is building a shred universe based on the characters of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The success of the original movie birthed Annabelle, which told the origin of the creepy doll that played a part in the marketing campaign, even though it was tangential to the main plot. Now, that pattern is repeating with the sequel, as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the studio is making plans for a spin-off based off the creepy demonic nun who makes life hard for The Warrens in The Conjuring 2, funnily enough called The Nun. What’s interesting to not is that the nun almost didn’t make the cut, with director James Wan originally envisioning a horned creature to take on her role. Wan pitched a new idea that was given the go ahead, and the new character was added to the movie during reshoots three months before the movie was released.
The Conjuring 2 co-writer David Leslie Johnson will pen the script, with Wan and Peter Safran producing. The Nun isn’t the only Conjuring spin-off getting the green light, with Annabelle 2 set for a May 19th 2017 release date, earmarked as the latest feature from David F. Sandberg, director of the up coming, and incredibly promising, Lights Out. It’s early days for The Nun at this time, but with this series proving to be an unstoppable box office juggernaut (for a horror movie at least), we have another potential franchise within a franchise on our hands.
