Last time we saw John Michael McDonagh he brought us the pitch black comedy/drama Calvary, as well as having some choice words to say about the Irish film community. Well, now he’s back with crime comedy War on Everyone, featuring Alexander Skarsgård and Michael Peña as two corrupt cops who set out to blackmail and frame every criminal who is unfortunate enough to cross their paths. Coming off a fantastic reaction last February at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, the first trailer is here, and it is something special indeed.
I am quite partial to bad guys as the main characters, but Skarsgård and Peña really take the cake here, and I can’t wait to go on this crazy ride with them. McDonagh’s scripts have always strayed on the darker side of pitch black, while still finding a real nugget of humour and exploiting it to its fullest, and that hasn’t changed here. This has been scratching at the edges of my interest for some time, and now it’s full blown one of my most anticipated movies of the year.
War on Everyone hits our screens on September 30th.
