While Star Trek Beyond won’t be coming our way till next week, talk is already turning to a possible fourth installment, and with it has come an interesting piece of information regarding the return of a character we haven’t seen since the prologue of 2009’s Star Trek. Yes, Chris Hemsworth’s George Kirk, father of Chris Pine’s James, has been teased to make a return, which is some feat since we saw him perish when Nero destroyed the Kelvin in the movie’s opening minutes.
Reporter Scott Mantz broke the news on Twitter, and it was all but confirmed by Abrams, now fully settled into his producer role in the Kelvin Timeline, during a press conference, saying:
“Yes, and there’s something that hopefully we’re figuratively minutes away from talking about. The answer is 100% yes, and it’s incredibly exciting.”
Trailers for Beyond has played up George’s influence on Kirk’s life, so they could already be sowing the seeds for a return, but how exactly will this end up working out? Well, time travel is something we can’t rule out, and since it’s a major part of this new universe’s conception, it would be a nice callback to what came before. But, and this is only speculation, what if the core timeline invaded the new rebooted universe again, and George somehow followed in the footsteps of Spock? Sure, there’s a lot of bending over backwards to pull this off, but it would present a nice dynamic between the two since the core George was alive long enough to his son become a Starlet officer and, of course, the reboot’s George died when Kirk was just a baby. But again, we know nothing concrete at this time, but with San Diego Comic-Con taking place next week, casting announcements could be incoming. Watch this space.
