With Indiana Jones well and truly ensconced in the House of Mouse, and Disney committed to bring us another adventure for Harrison Ford’s heroic archaeologist, I think we all assumed quite a few movies starring Indy are on their way, but a curious piece of information has come out of Star Wars Celebration Europe suggesting that Dr. Jones and co. will be getting the Marvel and Star Wars treatment with series of interconnected movies set in the same universe. Speaking at the Art of Storytelling, which shone the light on the Lucas film Story Group and their work crafting the different movies that make up the Star Wars franchise, ILM president Lynwen Brennan said,
Kiri [Hart] and her group have mapped out a story and timeline across multiple platforms many years in advance, many exhausting years in advance. … We have a great honor to have responsibility for, so we want to be really careful with that. Not only for Star Wars but with Indiana Jones, which we’re all really excited about as well.”
This strongly suggests that the story group have been tasked with crafting a long term future for the Indiana Jones universe. Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted at a continuation, or even reboot, of the series only last month, but at the time a shared universe seemed unlikely. But now it seems that is exactly what we’re getting. But what would a shared Indiana Jones universe entail? A big screen reboot of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles? A Marion Ravenwood solo movie? Or, god forbid, the continuing adventures of Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt Williams? Or the currently unwritten Indiana Jones 5 could introduce new characters who will be spun off into their own movies. It’s all up in the air at this stage, but I think one thing we can be sure of is that Indy won’t be riding off into the sunset any time soon.
