It originated in the deep, dark wilds of the Internet, and has been a fan theory that has persisted all the way during the production of Suicide Squad: that Jared Leto’s Joker is actually Jason Todd, the second Robin to fight at Batman’s side who died at the hands of the Clown Prince of Crime. It was a pretty convincing theory, backed up by eagled eyed fans noticing one of The Joker’s tattoo’s included a Robin, he had similar scars to holes in Jason Todd’s graffiti covered Robin costume from Batman v Superman, and around the same time the saga of Jason Todd was being played out in video game form in Batman: Arkham Knight. Sadly, it turns out not to be true, with Suicide Squad director David Ayer in an interview with WSVN-TV (and reported by THR) shut down the theory by turning to camera, and saying in no uncertain terms:
It ain’t the case. He’s not.
I will point out the cast of The Dark Knight Rises went out of their way to tell us Talia al Ghul wasn’t in the movie, even though we had overwhelming evidence, in the form of set photos, to prove she was. But Ayer is pretty forthright in his addressing of the issue, and rumours willing about the future Batman solo movie suggests Todd, in his comic book guise of the Red Hood, and the Joker are two spirit characters. At this point in time, it feels like this fan theory, as awesome as it as, is sadly not true.
Suicide Squad comes our way August 5th.
