Ok, I know Bates Motel is firmly in the realm of television, but the recasting of the Psycho’s iconic Marion Crane (played by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller) is a big deal. With the prequel series winding with it’s fifth series, it will finally be catching up with the first movie, and at San Diego Comic-Con it has been announced that none other than Rhianna will be taking that fateful shower in the Bates Motel when Crane makes her series debut. It’s unknown what changes will be made to the character (who was presented as the films lead before being memorably dispatched halfway through), and how big a role she will have in the final season. Speaking of the casting choice, executive producer Carlton Cuse and Kerry Erin had this to say, which admittedly smacks of PR speak:
We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.”
Bates Motel Season 5 begins production in the Autumn, befriend hitting our screens in 2017, so there is some time to wait to see what Rhianna does with the role.
