Bad Santa is probably one of the finest dark comedies of the 2000’s, and now thirteen years on, Billy Bob Thornton is once again pulling on the fake beard and red outfit as the foul mouthed Willie T. Stoke as he returns, along with his angry sidekick Marcus (Tony Cox) and ‘the kid’ Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly), to pull off another Christmas time heist. Joining the trio this time round in their criminal endeavours is Willie’s mother Sunny (Kathy Bates), whose involvement somehow lowers the quality of their criminal behaviour.
While a sequel to Bad Santa is something I don’t think we ever wanted, the prospect is one that does raise a little bit of a smile. Mean Girls director Mark Waters is at the helm this time round, promising a slight change in gear from original helmer Terry Zwigoff, but bringing the old gang back together is a step in the right direction. The first images have come our way, and seeing Thornton back in the Santa suit does have me warming to this.
Released: 23rd November (U.S.)/ 25th November (IRL/U.K.)
