It's been over a decade since The Office finished up. And excluding a lacklustre youtube series, it's been quite some time since we've seen David Brent on a screen anywhere. Not counting the infinite reruns.
I was under the impression that Ricky Gervais was doing quite well. After all he made the Golden Globes watchable, has had a few movies that haven't exactly crashed and burned completely and that standup thing seemed to do well enough for him too. Maybe he needs an extension to his house or wants some spending money for a holiday. Whatever it is, it's not enough to warrant brining back David Brent and bestowing him onto a cinema screen for an hour and a half. The words "cash" and "in" spring to mind, but none the less David Brent: Life on the Road sees a documentary crew follow Brent around as he decides to spend much of his pension fund on being a rock star and going on tour.
As tedious as it sounds, it's not the worst, to give Gervais his credit. Yes, parts of it are long and drawn out, but others are genuinely funny. Maybe Gervais took on too much here, not only is he acting, but he takes a writer AND director credit as well. And while it makes sense for him to do that in one way, considering he knows the character backwards, I wonder if somebody else took up the helm would we have got a better movie? No doubt "Please don't make fun of the disableds" wouldn't have made the final cut. A lot of this just seems to be crowbarred in there for the sake of it, and while some gags do hit, many miss the mark and the tediousness sets in again and again and again.
The cast are decent enough and Gervais is right at home with his most famous character. But, tragically that's not enough. Hard core office fans may get something out of this, but for everybody else stick with the re-runs. More like David Brent: Should have stayed at home!
