Holy shit!!! That was my first thought! Then my second thought involved large pinches of salt, so take this for what it is. A leak which appeared on 4chan (I know, I know) has Abrams in a very shortlist of directors in the running to helm the Man of Steel sequel. Besides Abrams, Sam Raimi and Shawn Levy are also on the list.
While Levy and Raimi have something on the cards (Starman for Levy and World War 3 for Raimi) Abrams has nothing officially listed as upcoming. Again, this isn't worth a fuck to be honest as these talented directors are always busy. But taking the above into account, Abrams would be a front runner for a Man of Steel sequel.
And The Force Awakens director is no stranger to the Kryptonian either, as he wrote a script called Superman: Flyboy which was very different to what Superman fans would have expected. It included the likes of Krypton not exploding, Kal-El being sent to Earth to specifically live with the Kents, Jor-El committing ritual suicide to join his son (Supes dies and is resurrected) and phenomenally Lex Luthor was to be revealed as a Kryptonian. Which sounds fucking insane. So if J.J. does get the gig, maybe not give him the writing gig as well?
Either way, this rumour, which needs to be digested with a gallon of salt, is still rather epic. Abrams is a huge talent and someone who has an amazing knack of capturing tone. Look at what he did with TFA. He's someone who may, just may, be able to bring credibility back to the Man of Steel once more!
