The live-action adaptation of anime classic Ghost in the Shell has been a contentious topic ever since it was first announced by in 2008. Reworkings of beloved classics are usually touchy subjects, but the controversy reached boiling point back in 2014 when it was announced that the cyborg crime drama would feature Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of Major Motoko Kusanagi, rather than a Japanese actor.
Well, we're finally getting a look at Director Rupert Sanders' (Snow White and the Huntsman) vision of the world of Ghost in the Shell. Judging from the five ten-second spots from Paramount Pictures, this version has captured much of the original's aesthetic. Check out the spots below:
Ghost In The Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology. Also starring Michael Pitt, Takeshi Kitano and Juliette Binoche.
Ghost in the Shell is released 31 March 2017
