Just as they did with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. have announced an extended cut of Suicide Squad for Digital HD and Blu-Ray, offering 13 minutes of new footage from David Ayers’ villain team-up. This extra footage is no where near the 30 minutes found in the BvS Ultimate Edition, which added context to previously confusing plot points and gave us some much need characterisation missing from the version which hit the big screen in March. The major problem people had with Suicide Squad was a lack of cohesion within the plot, with much of it feeling like two separate movies at some points, and I really don’t see 13 minutes fixing that. Of course, we'll have to wait and see what this extended edition has in store for us. A trailer has been released showing glimpse of the new footage, including extra scenes of Harleen Quinzel, before her transformation into Joker’s psychotic girlfriend.
What is on offer could be the extra Joker footage (some of which was seen in the original trailers for the movie) that is said to offer a deeper look at his and Harley Quinn’s relationship, which presented a much more abusive vision of their coupling more in keeping with the comic books. If that is the case, how it is presented will be very important in making it work for a mainstream audience.
Suicide Squad Extended Cut hits Digital HD on November 15th before it comes to Blu-Ray on December 15th.
