Of all the remakes and reboots that have come our way in the last few years, it’s safe to say that both Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes are the best of the bunch, breathing new life into the decades old franchise with a compelling new story that echoes the social commentary of the originals and some absolutely stunning use of motion capture. So of course, we eagerly looking forward to the Matt Reeves directed third installment, War for the Planet of the Apes, and while it’s been all quiet on that particular front lately, that’s going change with the first footage from the movie been shown at New York Comic-Con this Thursday. On top of this announcement, we also have the first official synopsis that gives us a taste of what to expect:
In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins this own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
Andy Serkis will of course be reprising the role of Ceaser, with Reeves previously likening his role in this installment to Moses (he can just take my money now if that’s the case), butting heads with Woody Harrelson as the Colonel. As the title suggest, we’re finally getting the human/ape conflict we’ve been waiting two movies for, with a much darker story teased this time round.
War for the Planet of the Apes is set for release July 14th 2017.
