Said to be almost a 30 year passion project for Martin Scorsese, we’ve heard very little in regards to Silence, based on the book of the same name by Shusaku Endo, up until now. That all changes with our first look at the legendary director’s new project, which has every chance of getting the attention of the Academy on the run-up to next year’s Oscars. A tale of religious tolerance set against the backdrop of 17th century Japan, Silence follows two jesuit priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who set out to find their missing mentor (Liam Neeson), only to encounter disdain and mistrust form the native population.
I find this trailer nothing short of incredible. From some truly gorgeous shot composition to a solid trio of leads, this promises to be an absolutely stunning piece of cinema. Crisis of faith amongst the clergy is nothing new, but the setting and time period give this familiar tale a unique flair, and being coming from the legendary storyteller that Scorsese is, we’ll no doubt be left with a lot contemplate once the credits roll.
