The Wizarding World of Harry Potter return in a few short weeks when Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them finally has the big screen, and a lot of people are still unclear has to how this prequel connects to the adventure of the Boy Who Lived. Up until now, it seemed like it was only tangentially connected, telling its own story set in the same world, but now star and self professed Potter nerd Ezra Miller has blown all our minds and dropped a pretty neat piece of information regarding an important figure in Harry Potter lore, one that we’ve only heard bits and pieces of in the books and movies: Gellert Grindewald.
As the video explains, Grindewald was a powerful dark wizard back in the time period of Fantastic Beasts, pretty much Voldemort before Voldemort existed, causing havoc with the powerful Elder Wand. With the Fantastic Beasts series planned to encompass five movies, forming it’s backbone around Grindelwald’s rise to power does present a rich mine of storytelling and does add some stakes to a story that we just thought revolved around a wizard and his enchanted briefcase full of magical creatures. The presence of the Second Salemers, a powerful group opposed to witchcraft, also adds a nice wrinkle to proceedings and stops the overall story from becoming Harry Potter 2.0.
Released: 18th November 2016
Synopsis: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
