Long before Suicide Squad hit the big screen, it was clear that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn would be the stand out star from David Ayer’s super villain team-up. So it wasn’t a surprise that a Harley-centric solo movie was being developed as a future part of the DCEU. Now, THR is reporting that the project now has a name, Gotham City Sirens (though there is the potential for another project featuring the female super team, The Birds of Prey), an all villainess team-up based on the recently wrapped comics series of the same name that will follow Ms. Quinn and Gotham City’s other femme fatales, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, getting up to their own particular brand of mischief. What’s more, Ayer will be staying in the super villain business a tad bit longer, signing on as director.
While Suicide Squad didn’t live up to the high expectations set by the movie’s marketing, and the fan hype surrounding it, Ayer is still a good director given the right script and free reign over the project. It’s clear that there’s been a lot of studio meddling on Warner Bros’ behalf in the DCEU thus far, and while there’s been a shake up in the shared universe’s creative structure, time will tell if this will solve the problems we’ve encountered so far. The concept has a lot of potential, with a trio of deep, strong female characters at its core, though it could easily fall into the trap of boiling them down to eye candy.
