The first trailer for Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers reboot focused on the more grounded aspect of this slightly grittier version of everyone’s favourite primary coloured monster fighters, with nary a floating head or gigantic robot in sight. It worked for what it was, but the jury was still out if the director could make the more out there aspects of the franchise work on the big screen. Well, we don’t have to wonder any longer with a new trailer dropping that really opens up the story for us, and introduces us to the new versions of longstanding characters like Zordon, Goldar, and the Putties, as well as giving us our first look at the Rangers’ vehicles of choice, the Zords, in action.
While some of what we see here doesn’t work, mainly the Putties being made up of whatever material is lying around and Goldar being a massive pile of gold given shape (in both cases the best way to describe them is ugly), the rest thankfully does with Bryan Cranston lending his usual gravitas to a massive floating head and the design of Bill Hader’s Alpha 5 (which looked horrid on paper) actually working when in motion. On top of that, there’s a nice line of humour running through it, and the Zords look bad ass!! Power Rangers fans should be more or less pleased here, while a new generation of fans will enjoy the chance of getting in on the ground floor.
Released: March 24th
