So, we all know what happened at the Oscars last night, with La La Land announced as Best Picture only for this to be revealed as a mistake only after a large number of the cast and crew had already to taken to the stage, with the real winner being Moonlight. At the time, blame seemed to be focused on Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway who announced the award, after much hesitation it must be added. But PricewaterhouseCooper, the accounting firm who have been in charge of counting and collating all the vote for the Academy Awards since 1934, have stepped forward, and issued a statement clarifying what happened:
We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.
We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.
So, this explains the long, incredibly awkward pause Beatty took when first opening the envelope, but what’s even funnier is Dunaway just blurted out the name without even sensing there was a problem. Anyway, now that we know what happened, you better believe someone is getting fired.
