Premiering at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, psychological thriller Personal Shopper was initially booed by spectators before receiving a four minute standing ovation at it’s official premier, and ultimately being lauded by critics. So to say this one will probably divide mainstream audience might be a bit of an understatement. Coming from French director Olivier Assayas (who shared the best Director award at Cannes), the movie see Kristen Stewart as a celebrity personal shopper and medium who haunts the Parisian home of her deceased twin brother, hoping to make contact with his spirit.
Despite some people’s inability to see beyond Stewart’s Twilight past, she has proven herself to be a fine actress in recent years, with the likes of Camp X-Ray and Still Alice showing off some really impressive range. Personal Shopper seems be another shows for what she can do, but time will tell if the movie’s seemingly slow, deliberate Hitchcock aping style will strike a chord with audiences.
Released: March 10th (U.S.)/ March 17th (IRL/U.K.)
