Last week, a bombshell was dropped that sent the Internet into more of a frenzy than usual: Warner Bros. was looking to reboot The Matrix. The backlash was to be expected. The Matrix is a modern day classic that changed the face of movies from the moment it hit our screens. It was real lightning in a bottle, and, as evidenced by the sequels and countless movies inspired by it, can’t really be replicated. Trying to ease the fan’s displeasure t the news, writer Zak Penn took to Twitter to say that this new movie wasn’t a remake or reboot, but something else entirely. If anybody reads that, and immediately shouts out prequel, you may be onto something, with BirthMoviesDeath reporting that one of the concepts Warner Bros. is looking at is a young Morpheus movie. This makes some sense, with Michael B. Jordan’s involvement already announced. If anybody was to take over a role form Laurence Fishbone, you could a hell of a lot worse than Jordan.
If this is the direction Warner Bros. are heading with the the currently in-development project, it may sit better with fans than a full reboot. Morpheus’ story is full of rich stories to mine, from his first waking up to the truth of the Matrix to becoming captain of the Nebuchadezzar to his visit to the Oracle that put him on the path to search out Neo. That storyline alone would put the new movie in Rogue One territory, fleshing out a small detail that was mostly glossed over first time round. And I have to believe, if young Morpheus is where this movie is going, Warner Bros. are taking cues from Disney after the success of that particular spin-off.
