Tom Hardy Is The New Venom!!!

Even though the character was grossly mishandled in the god-awful Spider-Man 3, Sony Pictures have been trying to get a spin-off for fan favourite villain Venom for years now. The Hunger Games director Gary Ross was eyed to take the helm in 2007, and while no real word has been given as to why the project fell, you have to believe the poor critical and fan reaction to Spider-Man 3 has to have something to do with it. The film was resurrected in 2013 as part of a shared universe stemming out The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but again, no dice. Now, Sony are hoping third time’s the charm with the announcement that Reuben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will be serving as director for the movie that will be part of its own universe and not associated with Spider-Man: Homecoming, which the studio is co-producing with Marvel Studios. But the big news is who will be playing the titular alien symbiote, with Tom Hardy making the jump from DC to Marvel, and signing on as Venom’s human host, Eddie Brock.

I can’t think of anyone better to play the near psychotic villain and sometime anti-hero, as Hardy has the knack of totally inhabiting any role he’s in. Just look at his turns in Bronsan, Legend, and, of course, The Dark Knight Rises, and now imagine that let loose on Venom. It’s safe to say it’ll be a hell of a lot better than want Topher Grace dis with the character. And if Fleischer can some of the energy he possessed with Zombieland, Venom will definitely be a must-see.

Production on Venom is set to begin later this year, with a release date set for October 5th 2015.
