Avatar has sold 1.5 million Blu-Ray units on its day of release according to comingsoon, and thats just in the states! I picked it up on the way home, and as far as I know Tesco of all places had it on sale at midnight. 2 Large standees stuffed with Avatar books and so on. I paid €25 for the Blu-Ray version, which comes with the DVD version! Why, I have no idea, although the front of the box says I can use it in the car, or the home etc. A bit pointless to be honest, and no doubt it drove the cost of the thing up! By the way, there are NO special features in this at all! Even if there was a little feature about Jim Cameron’s wonderful hair, it would have been something! So those of you who fancy finding out how the Na’Vi were created will have to double dip later in the year!
I also noticed that the Blu-Ray version is 1:78:1 which is what the IMAX version is as well as the 2K 3D version. But this isn’t a 3D Blu-Ray, so whats the point in getting the 3D aspect version of the movie. The 2D version is in 2:35:1. For those of you who hate the black bars top and bottom of your screen, this, as it says on the back of the box is the Full Frame Version (Don’t even get me started about the black bars, which are much of a muchness in my view). Maybe it’s to maximise it’s potential to your average home movie viewer who hates “them black bars”. To be honest, I’d much prefer the 2:35:1 version (It doesn’t exist in home version) as a) its what the 2D cinematic version was b) the home release is NOT 3D c) I’d prefer to see more of the actual image, like you would in 2:35:1. Because if there is a 2:35:1 version, I’d much rather that, until the 3D Blu-Ray turns up! Or maybe I’m completely wrong
I kinda feel like I’m missing out on something though! Either way, image quality is great! Didn’t get a chance to oomph up the volume as the wife was asleep, but will do a Spinal Tap on it later!
