The Bolton News is saying that The Hobbit could well start filming in January, and that’s according to Gandalf himself, Sir Ian McKellen. He also said that he wouldn’t be “sitting waiting” for shooting to start. The Hobbit has been fraught with problems, namely the MGM debacle of debt and so forth, so who knows what January will bring. I would imagine at this stage, and for everybody involved (namely Peter Jackson and the cast) it must be closer now to sooner rather than later? Fingers crossed. Sir Ian bequeathed a painting to his former school and insisted it not be hung in the headmasters office!
