Tony Scott has signed up to direct Top Gun 2 and recently had been speaking about the sequel to the 80’s jet fest. Tom Cruise had expressed an interest in playing Maverick, albeit in a role that’s not too obvious. But now, writer Christopher McQuarrie (Usual Suspects) has said to "There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role." Not sure how the Cruise machine will feel about that, but considering the story will involve drones, will it see Maverick taking on some drone jetfighter to save the world or something? Whether or not it would be a good move for Cruise, to do a full Maverick…hmmm. I’m not sure. Yes, all us nostalgia buffs will done our furry collared leather jackets and flock to the cinema…some of us may even attempt to get there in an F-14, but it’s not really going to set his career on fire again is it? And maybe that’s why Cruise is or was hesitant about playing a full role in the movie.
All that said, McQuarrie does have a point though. If The Dark Knight Rises had Batman playing a minor role we’d all stand outside Chris Nolan’s house swinging sticks! So, fancy a full on Maverick, or just a lickle bit?
