Daniel Stamm, director of this year's excellently creepy The Last Exorcism has made it official as of yesterday; he will direct an English language remake of the controversial French flick Martyrs. Having seen Martyrs (it's bloody fantastic) and then hearing rumors of an almost immediate US remake, I thought to myself, what's the point? The original is a nasty, nihilistic film with stuff most mainstream American audiences would freak over. Hell, not just Americans, most people in general were disgusted by the film. But with Stamm in the director's chair perhaps this could end up being totally it's own beast? After all, The Last Exorcism was probably one of the most effective films in the Horror genre for the past year. Martyrs is the story of a young woman, who after being kidnapped, tortured and subsequently released as a child, heads to a remote country home to take revenge on the people she believes were her captors.
