Today is a sad day for movie fans! Firstly, this morning I learn that Leslie Nielsen has passed away from pneumonia and moments ago I read that Irvin Kershner has died after a long illness as well.
Leslie Nielsen will be remembered for a multitude of comedies and performances, but some of his finest work will always have been as Dr. Rumack in Airplane and Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun Movies! The man can now no longer be called Shirley, but if there were ever to be a guy called Shirley, it was Leslie!
Whilst Irvin Kershner may well be remembered for Never Say Never Again or RoboCop 2, he will always be best remembered for directing The Empire Strikes Back, which many agree is the best of the 6 Star Wars flicks! It might have been Lucas’ vision, but Kershner brought his own style and stamp to a movie that has provided the most famous movie line of all time! While Lucas might be the Father of all things Star Wars, Kershner was the super cool Uncle that blew all our minds away, with Empire!
