It's almost hard to believe Green Lantern is less than two months away from release, what with the hype really only kicking in now as opposed to when the original and much-derided trailer appeared. Now, after a great reaction to the more spaceage footage screened recently, Variety are reporting that Warner Bros. have pumped 9 million extra dollars into finishing the effects. Yes, they've basically added on an entire Sofia Coppolla movie onto the budget to make sure things are just right.
I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened, but it's a very clear response to fan and critic worries by the studio. And whilst it's easy to say this is a result of panic stations at the studio, that's not definitely the case. Most huge summer movies go right down to the wire when it comes to editing/effects, and whilst the new footage did look great, there clearly is much to be done with the suit. I think if they can get that right - and nine million won't hurt - then Green Lantern will be one sharp looking interstellar offering, and as such one to watch over the summer.
Green Lantern is still on track to hit cinemas on June 17th, in 3D (don't get excited, it's post-converted) and 2D.
