Tron: Legacy was an interesting film for a number of reasons. Make no mistake, Disney hyped this up to be a blockbuster of Avatar proportions, giving it years of marketing and a Christmas slot. However, it turned out to be a strangely sombre (not much action really) blockbuster, albeit a stunning one. I loved it all, but it received a lukewarm reception and whilst a hit at the box office, didn't come near to what Disney must have wanted. So at the moment, it depends on how well the dvd sales do before any threequel emerges, leaving director Joseph Kosinski with a bit of free time.
Things have been slightly turbulent for him lately, with the house of mouse deciding against his post-apocalyptic script 'Oblivion' and putting it out for other studios to buy. For a while it looked like it was going nowhere but now, (via /film) Universal appear to be honing in on it with none other than Tom Cruise rumoured to star. Cruise's name, whilst damaged of late, would certainly increase the profile of the film for Kosinski and as a result, give him more cash to play with. Little is known of the film other than it's set in a world where people live in clouds above a desolate wasteland. The story focuses on a man (Cruise) who heads down to said wasteland, and presumably some Dramatic Things Happen.
Sounds like a good setup for a director who clearly has a keen eye for style. Tron, if anything, looked incredible and this film is Kosinski's own script (coming out in graphic novel form soon) and so should allow him to flourish as a director. For it's flaws Tron was impressive considering it was his first feature. Deanline are also reporting that he's tapped to direct Archangel, a sci-fi military film currently in rewrite-ville. So, whilst Tron may not have met the expectations of Disney, things are looking up for this talented director.
