I wouldn't normally cover something like this for The Movie Bit, but as we're all movie-junkies, I think this Time Out article is of great interest. You see, as we speak cinemas are converting their projectors over to the new format of digital projection, which would cut down a team of three projectionists to just one. As a projectionist myself (well, a few years ago), I started to notice the swapping over of physical 35mm film to the new digital 'giant USB sticks'. In many Cork cinemas now we watch our films through what can only be described as a huge grey/black box with a small monitor sat atop it. Of course, for those that like 3D, this is a good thing, as the third dimension cannot be projected on the older 35mm machines. But the question remains. Would you, as a cinema attendee, prefer to watch a film in good ole' dusty, scratchy celluloid or through a brand-spanking new digital computer? I think personally both sides have their advantages, but if I had to pick one I'd go with the 35mm film. Ain't nothin' like it...
