As much as I realise it's far from the pinnacle of film storytelling or in-depth character study, I absolutely love Transformers. The run up to the debut of the first film was hugely exciting, as it went from being a joke-project to a bone fide giant blockbuster. As a big, shiny piece of fun, it cannot be beat. Yes, I know Transformers 2 was a bit of a joke, but it seems those involved know that too so it's no surprise to hear they've tried to up the ante with the third and final (for Bay and Shia at least) entry. Finally, after only two short tv ads, we have a full trailer (and a new poster, above).
Whilst Transformers 2 certainly delivered with a big exciting trailer, this is leagues ahead. We still don't really know what's going on, aside from connections to the Moon, Space Race and how it leads (somehow) into the Decepticons properly invading Chicago. From the looks of things, they do a pretty good job! Here's some things to note about the new trailer:
1) Unlike 2, which was full to brim with new and not always welcome (Twins) characters, we see very few new faces here, and no new Autobots. If Bay is to believed, there aren't many new Autobots at all save for Sentinel Prime (brother of Optimus), some Nascars and a Ferrari 458, in an attempt to go back to the tighter team-based storytelling of the first one. We do of course see new, terrifying Decepticons which is neccessary after the Autobots killed so many of them in the last two movies. Look out for the one cocking a huge gun - that's Shockwave, the boss.
2) Megan Fox is indeed now out of the picture, and it looks like Shia's character already has a girlfriend (Rosie Huntington-Whitley) here, which is good because there's no time for romance to be blossoming when the world is going to hell.
3) The brilliant Frances MacDormand appears as a shady government type.
4) Expect casualties galore on both sides this time - we can see from the trailer that us puny humans have definitely gotten on ol' Optimus' nerves too. Not a guy you want to annoy.
5) DID YOU SEE THAT SNAKE DECEPTICON THING?!?
Check out the trailer below - the movie opens July 1 in 3D, and unlike most, has actually been FILMED in 3D so it might actually work.
