The Weinstein Company and Japan's Kurosawa Productions are currently in pre-production on a remake of Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, Seven Samurai. While it's being quoted as a remake, the film will be a contemporary re-imagining of the Feudal-Japan based story. Today, Variety received word that British filmmaker Scott Mann has been hired to direct. Mann's previous work includes various shorts and the 2009 action thriller, The Tournament. I've never caught any of Mann's work, so I couldn't pass judgement, but this just seems like a waste of $60 million. Hasn't Seven Samurai already had a re-imagining (The Magnificent Seven)?
