Remember when vampires were scary and generally bad-news? Twilight may have done it's best to turn them into glittering sissies but really, that's not why people love them. And if anyone is up to the challenge of making them interesting again, I'd say Neil Jordan is a decent choice. Sure, Interview With A Vampire was a bit bizarre but it at least looked sumptuous, and Company of Wolves was a terrific (if dated, now) take on fairy tales. Now, /film are reporting that he's revisiting the vampires for a new movie called Byzatium, with young Irish star Saoirse Ronan.
The film is reportedly about a mother vampire and her daughter who work together to do various vampire-y deeds. No doubt the film will be a lot more interesting than that, with Jordan at the helm. Gemma Arterton is being tapped to play the mother also. No word yet on production but as it's being sold at Cannes right now, whoever buys it could determine whether we see it this year (maybe unlikely) or next. Interesting and promising that Ronan chose this movie - she turned down a small role in The Hobbit to focus on more fruitful opportunities closer to home so this could be one of them.
