There has been a lot of hoopla surrounding the casting of Tom Cruise in Adam Shankman's musical adaptation Rock of Ages, primarily because it could be unbelievably embarrassing to watch Cruise sing or it could be part of a career revival. But aside from Cruise, the cast is getting quite full with some pretty big names lining out for it too.
The plot centres around a 'rock club' and two young types, Julianne Hough (Burlesque) and Diego Boneta (90210) who meet each other there and encounter a great deal of rockstar people, including Cruise as a rock god of sorts. Also in the film are Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti, Brian Cranston (Breaking Bad), Catherine Zeta-Jones and ALEC BALDWIN. That last one being particularly amazing.
We all know Queen of Wales Zeta Jones can sing, as can Mary J and Russell Brand (a bit), but the jury's out on the rest of the cast. This is set to be an all-singing, all-dancing movie so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. Obviously they'll be trying for Mamma Mia-style success and whether the material is up to it or not, I'll be keen to see Alec Baldwin in a big singing role. They must be worried though that Cruise could make or break it, especially when the film has an Oscar-winning musical star alongside him.
Rock of Ages opens June 1 2012, poised as ideal counter-programming to the deluge of superhero movies out that time of year.
