After a few years off the scene, Spielberg is certainly keeping himself busy. His upcoming roster includes shooting Lincoln, Robopocalypse, and perhaps one of the Tintin sequels. It was even suggested (albeit in passing) that should Michael Bay bail out of the inevitable Transformers 4, Steve himself would step in. I doubt that will happen, but there’s another ‘fourquel’ he is interested in.
THR report that he has been meeting with Thor screenwriter Mark Protosevich to discuss possible ideas for a sequel to the dino trilogy. The third movie was directed by Captain America helmer Joe Johnston, who has since said he won’t do another one. Spielberg himself said if Johnston wouldn’t do it – he would.
Whilst it would undoubtedly bring in the money at the box office, another Jurassic Park could be a big risk. I may be biased in my sentimentality, but the original movie is one of the definitive blockbusters and if you were to watch it today, you’ll see that it hasn’t dated whatsoever. When you consider how the use of CGI has increased since 1994 it’s pretty incredible how none of the effects look dated or sub-par – the dinosaurs still look spectacular. Personally I think a lot of that is to do with the amazing animatronics and brilliant work of the late, great Stan Winston and his studio – cgi creations might be cheaper or easier, but when done right animatronics can be amazing, as Jurassic Park proved.
It says a lot about the quality of Jurassic Park when you think of how many dinosaur movies we have seen since – very few, perhaps showing people just don’t want to try to top it. That said, even though he did do The Lost World, if a fourth movie is on the cards I’d be thrilled to see Spielberg take the reins, provided it had a story worth telling.
