Whilst there is no doubting her phenomenal success in the world of music, Madonna hasn't exactly lit up the silver screen. She's had a few memorable turns for the right reasons (Evita, Desperately Seeking Susan) and the wrong ones (Swept Away) but never really sustained a proper film career. She even said recently she wouldn't act again because she didn't want to put herself through it. However, she has developed an interest in working behind the camera, and for the last 18 months been at work on her debut feature film, W.E.
The film is about Wallis Simpson, the American socialite who married into the Royal Family and thus caused her husband, King Edward, to leave his position on the throne. The film has two strands as it also follows present-day Abbie Cornish as she gets involved in a similar relationship, Julie & Julia style. Up until now, Madonna's reputation had preceded her and the buzz wasn't huge, even though she has reportedly put 18million of her own money into it (she'd make that back a few weeks of touring). Now though, THR report that The Weinsteins have bought it, which makes things sound a lot more interesting. They're famed for buying Oscar fodder and indeed, this year brought home the gold with the Kings Speech. They've already bought Meryl Streep Thatcher movie The Iron Lady, which is basically a shoo-in for awards, so things are looking promising for W.E. if they think it can join that roster. No word on a release date but expect it soon.
Imagine if she was even nominated for an Oscar? Guy Ritchie would squirm.
