The reaction to Ridley Scott returning to the Blade Runner universe was mixed, at best, with many thinking he should leave the property well alone and work on other material instead – after all, it is a cult classic and a legendary sci-fi movie. However, as his many directors cuts of Blade Runner can attest to, Scott has a strong interest in the franchise so it’s understandable why he might return – some might be inclined to say that if they’re going to do it, might as well be with him.
It’s a long way off – he hasn’t even released Prometheus yet – but Bleeding Cool are reporting that Scott Z. Burns is being tapped as the writer for the new project. Burns has an enviable c.v, having written the well-received Contagion, The Informant! and the brilliant Bourne Ultimatum. He’s also written the upcoming Man From U.N.C.L.E for Steven Soderbergh and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea for David Fincher. Not a bad pedigree at all then, for a film that will no doubt continue to be viewed with much trepidation.
Personally I think this could turn out very positive. Specific rules about ownership of rights essentially prevent the movie from being a remake, and there’s no doubt that the Blade Runner universe is one which has ample space for another story. Plus, with todays technology it’s sure to look spectacular. What do you think? Should Scott leave this one be? Or is the talk of Scott Z. Burns good news? Comment below!
