Back in 2004 during our own Cork Film Festival, I was lucky enough to get a spot on the ‘Youth Jury’, judging all the short films across the week. When handing out the our prize at the end we chose Wasp, a film about a single mother by then-newcomer Andrea Arnold. We had no idea how far she’d go however – she ended up winning the Oscar for that very film!
My own obvious clairvoyance aside, it was clear that Arnold was a talent to watch. She’s had two feature films, Red Road and Fish Tank, both gaining considerable praise. Her latest, Wuthering Heights, is an adaptation of the famous novel and by the looks of it, sets to continue her winning streak – at least on a visual level. The trailer is sparse but looks superb. Someone should hire her to direct a car ad!
Wuthering Heights is released next year.
