Welcome to The Movie Bit’s recommendations for your Halloween night / weekend. So grab your DVD’s and enjoy your screaming…sorry, screening. To guide you through this experience, we’ve scored all these out of 5.
SCARE SCORE – The Guide
1: You actually thought we’d scare score something with a one? Hah!
2: Unless you’re the ultimate wimp, there’s nothing here you can’t handle. Otherwise it’s pants shitting time.
3: This is the movie you can show your better half. While they may well be terrified, this won’t cause you to lose any bodily functions. Granted you will be frightened, but you’ll manage to keep it in.
4: You will need somebody to hold your hand. You will whimper like a dying dog on occasion. You won’t crap yourself, but there will be some piss.
5: Full on madness. You will cry, become afraid of the dark and will shit your pants. Have spare underwear and air freshener nearby.
 | THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL(2009) - Ti West I find it increasingly hard to find a genuinely frightening film these days. That's why I picked Ti West's masterful babysitter-slasher/devil-cult thriller, The House Of The Devil. I can guarantee you'll be terrified. SCARE SCORE: 5 |
 | ZODIAC (2007, David Fincher) Some may disagree, but I've found the more realistic a film is, the more moving and frightening it becomes. Fincher's Zodiac is a crime classic, that's also terrifyingly real. The hunt for a serial killer has never been so nerve-racking. SCARE SCORE: 4 |
 | THE MIST (2007) - Frank Darabont Rather than stick to picking the classics of the 60's, 70's & 80's, I'm looking to the naughties for my frights this year. And nothing beats a good creature feature, so The Mist is a perfect choice. Amazing, EFX work, direction & performances. SCARE SCORE: 4 |
 | AUDITION (1999) Takashi Miike. All is not as it seems in this incredible disturbing Japanese horror. Hardly surprising considering Takashi ‘Ichi’ Miike is involved. Following the death of his wife, Aoyama is finally persuaded, by a friend in the film industry, to start dating again. He holds a series of fake movie auditions in order to find the right girl and meets a beautiful young woman named Asami in the process. Asami seems to be the girl of his dreams, but as the movie continues, things take a horrifying, disturbing turn for the worse. Not for the faint of heart, it’s not as graphic as Miike’s other work, but Audition’s real skill is making you imagine what’s happening off the camera. SCARE SCORE: 4 |
 | THE EVIL DEAD (1981) – Sam Raimi Not the scariest movie in the world, but easily one of my favourite. If you’re a fan of zombie movies, or movies in general chances are you’ve seen the Evil Dead. While the story may now seem clichéd, the effects old fashioned and the acting awful, there are few movies that have done more for the genre. The Evil Dead tells the story of a group of friends who travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unwittingly resurrect an ancient evil. . Featuring the frenetic camera work that would become Raimi’s hallmark, it has some of the most disturbing stop motion creatures seen on film. Far more terrifying than CGI any day. SCARE SCORE: 3 |
 | ERASERHEAD (1977) – David Lynch Perhaps it wasn't marketed as an explicitly horrific movie, but Eraserhead is insane, and impossible to forget about. Probably one of the most extreme and polarising things David Lynch has ever done, it manages to be both hugely interesting and heart-stoppingly scary at the same time. Don't believe me? Check out the baby scenes. SCARE SCORE: 3 |
 | THE STRANGERS (2008) – Bryan Bertino Home invasion is a terrifying real-life prospect, so the idea of The Strangers is scary enough, before you even watch the movie. Almost unbearably tense, the film had me on edge for it's entirety, and still manages to creep the bejesus out of me. Mainly because I think of it every time the doorbell rings. SCARE SCORE: 4 |
 | THE RING (2002) – Gore Verbinski Many prefer the original film, Ringu, and many think it's a ridiculous premise, but for me the American remake of The Ring is one of my personal scariest film memories. Why? Well, not knowing what the film was about, myself and friends went in blind, happy to have found a horror movie that wasn't 18s. What followed was a film that had enough shocks, jumps and surprises to keep me awake for days after.... SCARE SCORE: 4 |
 | PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2007) – Oren Peli Another found footage movie, but holy crap, does it hit you like a tonne of bricks. The soundtrack to this and the sound design here will have you reaching for a clean pair of underpants in minutes. Never in a lifetime of watching movies has something given me ice cold chills and shivers. This thing scared me senseless. So much so, I’ve never even taken it out of the plastic wrapping on the Blu-Ray and will NEVER watch it again. Trust me on this one, you will be afraid of the dark and you will sleep with the lights on after this. SCARE SCORE: 5

 | WHAT LIES BENEATH (2000) – Robert Zemeckis Either a nice lakeside house is haunted by a ghost, or the wife of Han Solo is losing her mind. There is a scene in this that will make you jump and scream like a starving toddler. End of. SCARE SCORE: 3 (but one scene is an all out 5)

 | ZOMBIELAND (2009) – Ruben Fleishcer) Ok, so while there are a few “jumps” in this one, we’ve included this for those of you who are genuinely too feeble and weak to man it up and cry like babies after watching some of the other selections. That said, if you’re afraid of clowns, this has got the most terrifying clown you will ever see. Forget King’s IT, this is the one! Other than that, enjoy the ride as the bloke from cheers and Mark Zuckerberg kick Zombie ass. SCARE SCORE: 2
