Family Guy has grown from a show that was cancelled twice into a multi-billion dollar cartoon empire, creator Seth MacFarlane launching two more tv shows (American Dad, The Cleveland Show) since and signing a 100million dollar deal with Fox last year.
Next year, MacFarlane’s first live-action movie, Ted, about a teddy bear come to life (starring Mark Wahlberg) hits cinemas, and he’s also working on a reboot of The Flintstones which may head to cinemas as well as tv. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter however, comes the news that a Family Guy movie is also on the way.
Whilst this is no surprise, it’s still welcome news, especially as MacFarlane suggests that he’d rather finish the show and do high-quality movies with the characters than keep the show going too long. I’ve loved Family Guy since the very first episode – I even have early seasons on VHS! – but recent seasons haven’t matched the early brilliance of the show, with American Dad in particular getting funnier by contrast. Regardless of the future of the show on tv (lets be honest, it’s not going anywhere yet even if MacFarlane would like that), a movie is being written so it hopefully won’t be too far off. They’ve always had a love for movies on the cartoon so hopefully that will translate well onto the big screen.
Is this good news for you? Or would you rather see a full-length American Dad movie like their Bond spoof ‘Tearjerker’? Or both? Or, like some, do you wish all of MacFarlane’s comedies just vanished off the face of the earth? Comment below!
It should be noted too that they did have a dvd ‘movie’ before, called Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story – but that was in reality just three episodes on one dvd. Their Star Wars spoofs are plenty cinematic though!
