While Sony's timing does seem very misguided, Isaacson's biography was fully endorsed by Jobs, and was even commissioned at his request. Isaacson has an impressive track record with biographies and has completed works on Benjamin Franklin and Einstein in the past. The biography is officially described as:

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits.
