Without wishing to jump the gun, it very much looks like Tom Cruise is making some big waves in cinema again after all the post-couchjumping fallout that resulted in audiences not responding to films like Valkyrie and Knight & Day (which wasn’t helped by being crap). He’s headlining the eagerly awaited Rock of Ages musical, is set to star as Jack Reacher in One Shot, has signed on to Horizons (a dystopian sci-fi from the Tron Legacy director with a huge budget), and before all that he’s returning to the screen in Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Busy man.
The Hollywood Reporter now say that it looks like he’ll be adding another big film to that list – Doug Liman’s next film, We Are Mortals, based on the story All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The synopsis to the novel is;
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?
A pretty interesting premise, yes? No word yet on who Cruise would play, but Collider report that Brad Pitt already passed on a role. It’s an exciting prospect though, and it definitely looks like Cruise is becoming a Big Deal yet again.
