According to the LA Times, Universal Studios are looking to fast track the next two instalments of the high octane franchise. This year's Fast Five (Fast & The Furious: Rio Heist) was seen as a return to form for the series, giving stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker a much needed hit, along with making Universal a tidy profit. Director Justin Lin is set to remain in the driver's seat and is considering making both sequels back to back, with a single overlying story.
It's a technique that's been tried before to varying degrees of success, most notably on the Lord of the Rings and Matrix trilogies. It can prove more cost effective for studios, cutting down on actors wages, equipment and set costs, but on the flip side if the sequel tanks, it doesn't bode well for the third movie. However it's hard to blame Universal for trying the idea, the Fast & Furious franchise is currently the studios most profitable, and while they're not the best movies in the world, they're always entertaining.
The Fast & The Furious 6 is due for release on May 24th 2013.
