Up In The Air, the last film from Jason Reitman, was one of my favourite films of 2009, so no matter what he decided to do next I’d have been hugely excited about it. For Young Adult, he’s reteaming with Juno writer Diablo Cody for a movie about a successful writer of teen fiction called Mavis (Charlize Theron) who returns to the small town of her childhood to woo an old flame. Not that many people actually want her there….
There has been a lot of buzz about how dark the film gets, and the trailer definitely sells the idea that Mavis is not a remotely likeable character – helped hugely by Theron, who is easily one of the best actresses working today. Whilst Cody’s writing can be hit and miss (Juno was great, Jennifer’s Body…wasn’t) I think this looks like it could be fantastic. Could there be another Oscar nom for Theron? Time will tell.
