Scorsese to direct Nesbo thriller
Working Title Films along with Norwegian author Jo Nesbo have confirmed that Martin Scorsese will direct the film adaptation of the bestselling novel The Snowman.
Scorsese has been interested in the project for a while now but had to wait for Nesbo to give the final approval to the director. The author has confirmed to the Swedish media that an English adaptation of his book will have Scorsese at the helm. He is open to the prospect of the movie being shot outside of Oslo where the story is set. For the director this project sees him return to a very successful genre. He won an Oscar for the acclaimed movie The Departed; Nesbo’s novel features a Norwegian detective Harry Hole, chasing a serial killer in a series of gruesome murders. Hole is a gritty, no nonsense cop who stands up for what is right who gets embroiled in a battle of wits.
The script will be written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (he of World War Z fame) and the movie will be produced by Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Author Nesbo will be the recipient of executive producer credit as will his literary agent Niclas Salomonsson. As there are a number of books featuring the character of Harry Hole in circulation, a successful movie could well spawn a series of sequels which will go down well with fans. Comparisons with Stig Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are inevitable and this could be one of the hot tickets on next year’s circuit.
