It’s probably only in the last few years or so I’ve become more and more aware of an incredibly vibrant, local filmmaking scene where, this website calls home, Cork, Ireland. Indeed it is something I have dabbled with for years where time permits.
Take a look at many of the Corkonian made movies in this years Cork Film Festival or indeed the Festival Fringe at The Pavilion (both events are now running).
From my talkshow perspective (5 mornings a week) I all too often run into the “Young people these days have nothing to do” debate. Well, looking at the local film making scene alone, that argument is blown out of the water. Not everybody will sit on their arse, hanging around street corners mugging old biddies and dealing drugs. Believe it or not, there are some (actually lots) that actually do something with their lives. And while many are making big piles of shite that wouldn’t be found in a bargain bin in a dump, the point is they are still doing. Learning. Creating. Which is a helluva lot more than alot of people.
Either way, our hats are tipped to the local Cork film makers (and indeed amateur filmmakers around the world). And speaking of, there is another opportunity to grab some local film action in The Gate Cinema this Sunday, November 20th at 11:30am. It’s free and support your own (as we say in this part of the world) and pop along. Best of luck to all involved.
