3D conversion has got a really bad name. Dodgy conversion after dodgier conversion has plagued the genre with the words “rip off” “shit” “pointless” “shit” and so on. I’ve been really against the conversion process, but when James Cameron decided to go back and convert 3D, it pricked my attention. After all Cameron has really pioneered or reimagined 3D as we know it, with Avatar. And ironically enough, Avatar spawned the current 3D splurge that is ongoing.
There’s a great quote from George Lucas in the below video. He makes the point that 3D conversion is an art form. Which, one you think about it and the way it’s explained, it does give you some hope. It also makes you wonder what the hell happened on Clash of the Titans and Green Hornet (to name but two). There’s also some great quotes from John Knoll from ILM, someone I’ve admired for quite some time. It’s Knoll’s input makes me confident that The Phantom Menace 3D could well be a turning point for 3D conversion. It may even open up a new department at ILM. Anyway, check the video.
