When an unbelievably deep voice announced at the end of 2010's hyper violent Machete that Danny Trejo would return as the title character, a tough as nails Mexican lawman, in Machete Kills, I just chalked it up to creator and co-director Robert Rodriguez aping the style of 1970's grind house films, the inspiration for the movie and the fake trailer that spawned it. But I was wrong to assume, as Rodriguez, who has enjoyed successes with Sin City and Spy Kids, has indeed lined up Machete Kills as his next project.
An April start date is being eyed for the feature, which promises to be even bigger and crazier than the first one, which also starred Robert DeNiro and Jessica Alba. I find that statement hard to believe. No way can they top the shot of Machete using a mans intestines to abseil down the side of a building.
While the original had Trejo's character going up against corrupt U.S. senators and Mexican crime lords, the sequel is said to have Machete teaming up with the American government to take on a Mexican drug cartel and a James Bond type villain with access to a world threatening satellite weapon. At the moment, Trejo is the only actor confirmed to be returning.
