The original 1987 movie, directed by Paul Verhoven, spawned two sequels, numerous T.V. spin offs, comic book series', and video games. The franchise has proved so popular that a successful Internet campaign was founded to fund the making of a Robocop statue to put on display in Detroit, the city where the movie was set.
Padilha is said to be approaching the project a bit differently from the original, focusing more on the task of transforming a man into a machine, something the first movie glossed over. The new movie is expected to start shooting in the summer.
