Released in 2002, Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's comic book Y: The Last Man follows Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand, the only males left on the planet after a mysterious casthrope kills off everyone with a Y chromosome. Teaming up with 355, an agent of a secret government organisation, and Dr. Mann, the leading expert on cloning, to find out the reasons for the disaster and why he survived. Tightly written, full of fantastic ideas, and providing a multi layered mystery to keep readers coming back, it is basically the comic version of Lost, but they actually took the time to explain what was going on.
A movie version has been on the cards for the last few years, with Road Trip's Breckin Meyer and Eugene Levy, star of T.V. show Chuck, both tipped for the role of Yorick at different times. Now New Line Pictures are attempting to get the project off the ground again, and have signed on two writers, Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia (T.V. show Jericho), to build the script from the ground up. There has been no more word on the project. Fingers crossed the this attempt will come through, as this story deserves to be up on the big screen.
