The promotional campaign for Paul Thomas Anderson’s new project The Master is well underway, now with the release of the second teaser for the film, PTA’s first since his masterpiece There Will Be Blood.
The first teaser seemed to slip under our radar here at TheMovieBit.com (you can see that below), but with the release of this trailer, which gives us a deeper, slightly more rounded look at Joaquin Phoenix’s character Freddie Sutton, and the first glimpse of Philip Seymour Hoffman as the titular character ‘The Master’; Lancaster Dodd.
The story is a 1950s-set drama centred on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) known as "The Master" whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter (Phoenix) who becomes his right-hand man. The talented Amy Adams is also onboard, as the wife of Lancaster Dodd; Mary Sue.
This project has raised the eyebrows of critics who have pointed out glaring similarities between the plot of The Master and the founding of scientology under L. Ron Hubbard. Anderson reportedly screened the film for his good friend, and infamous scientologist, Tom Cruise who, according to anonymous sources, “had issues” with some parts of the movie. Speculations regarding the links to Scientology will, undoubtedly, intensify following the release of this; a brooding, thoroughly enigmatic trailer, the way they should be.
Any fan of Anderson, and movies in general, should be looking forward to this which will be released stateside in October, and should arrive on these shores sometime later in 2012. I cannot wait.
