Based on real life events, Gangster Squad is the third feature from Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less director Ruben Fleischer, and is certainly a departure from those zany comedies. The movie chronicles the efforts of the L.A. Police Department to keep crime lord Mickey Cohen out of the city in the 1940's and 1950's. Sean Penn plays Cohen, and is the third actor to portray the notorious crime boss on the big screen, after Harvey Keitel in Bugsy, and Paul Guilfoyle in L.A. Confidential.
Fleisher has assembled a pretty impressive cast, including Penn, Josh Brolin, Robert Patrick, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Giovanni Ribshi, and Nick Nolte, and the trailer promises a lot of action. It will interesting to see if he handles drama as well as he handles comedy.
